About the Artist, Djivan Schapira
Djivan Schapira is a 28-year old French-born artist and maker of collectible design based in Union City, New Jersey.
His works of functional art, dubbed retro-contemporary, draw inspiration from growing up in the forest of the French countryside, his love for the space-race era, and experiences one can only gain from growing up in New York City.
Djivan’s creative and technical abilities are in his DNA. The son of a master craftsman, Djivan developed his advanced woodworking practice over the course of 15 years as an apprentice, before discovering a new medium which he would master throughout his early twenties: resin.
After graduating from the Architecture program at Parsons School of Design, Djivan would combine the two practices he loved most – resin & woodworking – to create ABDB Designs: an atelier producing made-to-order furniture & interior décor for residential & commercial spaces. ABDB was founded on Schapira’s now patented-technique of embedding cross-cuts of recycled wood in resin.
Since it’s in launch 2018, Djivan has collaborated with designers from around the world on hospitality, restaurant, and residential projects, until the year 2021, when discovery & curiosity would peak new interests into the world of Collectible Design.
In February of 2022, Schapira would debut his first solo show, Djivan Schapira: Au Bout Du Bois presented by High Line Nine Galleries, in the Chelsea gallery district of New York City. The show features ten unique works of exceptional form and composition, originally designed & fabricated by himself between 2021 & 2022.
Since the opening of his debut show, Schapira’s recognition has risen greatly, with his functional artworks now visible in multiple galleries around New York City, including High Line 9, Jonathan Cohen Studio, and an internationally renowned gallery which cannot yet be named.
Djivan has been featured in world-renowned publications including Architectural Digest, Modern Luxury, Surface Magazine, and Owners: a French magazine exclusively for Aston Martin owners, in addition to winning an internationally acclaimed A’ Design Award for his Andromeda Cocktail Table in 2019.
